Perfume fragrance oils for candles are not one ingredient. Each oil is a blend of many scent molecules, mixed so they read as a single smell. The researchers note that most everyday smells are mixtures of dozens or hundreds of molecules. Scientists at the Monell Chemical Senses Center have just tested how well computers can predict what such blends smell like. The answer helps when you choose a candle.
Fragrance Oils For Candles Are Blends, Not Single Notes
The study appeared in August 2026 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and Monell published a summary. The team combined smell ratings from three earlier studies. These covered 168 single molecules and 731 mixtures. Twenty-six teams then built models to predict how alike two mixtures smell. The best models were combined and tested on 50 new pairs.
The best models did moderately well. Mixtures were no harder to predict than single molecules. The models also leaned on everyday smell words such as "fruity and sweet". This is early research from a research institute. It is not a Glow claim.
Why do two floral candles smell so different?
Each one uses a different blend. Change one part and the whole smell shifts. That is why a rose in one jar differs from a rose in another. Try the Floral range and notice the gaps. Even the names hint at it. Moonflower, Twilight Lavender, Wild Rhubarb & Citrus and Raw Honey & Elderberry all sit in one family. Each points to a different mix of flower, herb, fruit and sweetness.
Candles And Fragrances Are Easier To Pick With Plain Words
If everyday words help a computer, they can help you. You do not need perfume terms. Describe a scent you love in simple language, then shop by those words. Write them on your phone so you have them next time.
- Say if it feels sweet, green, fresh or warm.
- Say if you want it light or heavy.
- Name a flower you enjoy, such as jasmine or rose.

Try A Blend In Small Steps
A new floral can surprise you once it is lit. Test it in a smaller form first. Wax melts let you sample a blend without committing to a whole jar. If you love it, the 3-wick jars are the next step up.
Quick answers
What is fragrance oil in a candle?
It is a blend of many scent molecules, mixed to read as one smell. The oil is added to the wax, and the blend decides how your candle smells.
Can a computer predict how a candle will smell?
Partly. The 2026 Monell study found models could predict how alike two blends smell, with moderate accuracy. It is a research tool, not a shopping tool yet.
If a floral blend caught your attention, have a look at the Floral range. Choose by the words you would use to describe it.
