Scented Candle Wax Myths: Does The Type Really Matter?

Scented candle wax gets blamed for a lot. Some people say soy is safer. Others say paraffin burns best. Two respected sources disagree on this, and that is worth knowing before you spend money. Here is what each one says, then the habits they both agree on. You do not need a science degree to sort it out.

Scented Candle Wax: What Two Experts Actually Say

The National Candle Association is an industry group. It says all well-made candles burn cleanly, whatever the wax. It backs that with an international study and calls "some waxes are better" a myth.

Cleveland Clinic sees it differently. Lung doctor Dr Renee Dixon says paraffin, which is made from petroleum, seems to give off more emissions than other waxes. She suggests beeswax, soy or other plant-based waxes instead.

She also says there is not enough strong evidence to call candles a danger to your health. Notice the gap. One source is an industry body. The other is a doctor. Neither tested the candle in your lounge room.

So which wax should you choose?

Pick the one you feel good about. Then look at how you burn it. If you like a clean, green scent, the Fresh fragrances include Cucumber & Aloe and Seagrass Eucalyptus.

A Candle Wick Trimmer Beats Any Wax Debate

Here both sources line up. They give almost the same care advice. Trim the wick to a quarter of an inch (about 6 mm) before each burn. Keep the room airy. Keep the flame away from anything that could catch fire.

A candle wick trimmer makes the first step quick. The NCA says a short wick, no drafts and a clean wax pool all help keep soot down. Here is the short version:

  • Trim the wick to ¼ inch before every burn.
  • Keep candles away from drafts, fans and vents.
  • Pick stray wick bits out of the wax.
  • Stop when about ½ inch of wax is left.

Why Fresh Scents Need The Same Care

Fresh is a wide family. Perfumers put citrus, herbs, sea air and green leaves inside it. Going by their names, Salty Seascape and Farm Fresh Herbs sit in different corners of it. Nothing in either source says a fresh scent needs special treatment. A tidy wick keeps soot down and the jar clear, whatever the scent. The 3-wick jars are a good place to try it.

Quick answers

Is soy wax better than paraffin?

The sources disagree. The National Candle Association says no wax is better when a candle is well made. Cleveland Clinic suggests plant-based waxes over paraffin. Both back trimming and fresh air.

Do I need a candle wick trimmer?

Scissors work, but a trimmer gives a clean cut at the right length. Both sources say to trim to ¼ inch. It is a small habit that helps keep soot down.
