Scented Soy Candles: Is Soot From The Wax Or The Flame?

Black marks on the glass make people blame the wax. With scented soy candles, the cause is usually the flame. Soot is the fine black dust left when wax does not burn fully. A flame that is too tall, or pushed around by air, makes more of it. Here is what the candle industry says, and how to keep your jar clean.

Scented Soy Candles and Soot: What the Wax Does Not Decide

The National Candle Association says soot comes mainly from flame and combustion disturbances, not from the type of wax. It also says all major candle waxes show the same basic burn behaviour.

That is an industry body, so treat it as one view. We have not found independent testing that settles the soy versus paraffin argument. So we will not tell you one wax is cleaner. Several of our jars are listed as soy paraffin blends, which is why we care about getting this right.

Why does a candle flame make soot?

A flame needs the right balance of air and fuel. The NCA explains that too much or too little of either lets unburned carbon escape as soot. A long wick feeds the flame too much fuel. A draught pushes it around. Both are easy to fix.

Three Habits That Keep Any Wax Burning Clean

A candle wick trimmer is the one tool worth owning. It cuts the wick short and clean, so the flame stays small and steady.

  • Trim the wick to about 6mm before every burn.
  • Keep the jar away from fans, vents and open windows.
  • Burn long enough for the wax to melt right across the top.

Trim when the candle is out and the wax has set. Then you can see what you are cutting.

Soy Wax Scented Candles for a Soft Floral Mood

If you like a room that smells like a garden, start with the Floral range. Floral means scents built around flowers, such as rose or jasmine. The 3-wick jars are the ones that fill a whole living room. Three wicks mean three flames, so trimming matters even more.

Quick answers

Do soy candles make less soot than paraffin?

The NCA says wax type is not the main cause of soot. It points to wick length and drafts instead. We have not found independent testing showing a difference, so a trimmed wick helps more than switching wax.

How short should I trim a candle wick?

Trim it to about 6mm, which is a quarter of an inch, before every burn. That is the length the NCA recommends. Cut it only when the candle is out and the wax has set.

A clean burn starts with a short wick and a calm spot in the room. Have a look at the jars that suit your space, and keep a trimmer next to them.
